NORTHMELD WORKFLOWS
Standardize Excel fields and values
Northmeld helps standardize spreadsheet fields and values using reviewable rules and mappings. Import an Excel table, define the desired format or vocabulary, review affected rows, and export the confirmed data.
For teams combining spreadsheets from different contributors or preparing consistent data for another system.
How it works
- 1
Inspect the source table
Import the Excel table and check its headers, dates, identifiers, and inconsistent category values.
- 2
Define a shared vocabulary
Create explicit mappings or standardization rules for the selected fields. Review matches and uncertain values before applying the rules.
- 3
Check and export
Confirm values against the source and export the reviewed table. Reuse saved rules for later files when appropriate.
Example input and output
Input
Country US U.S.A. United States
Output
Country United States United States United States
Illustrative mapping with an explicitly chosen target value. Resolve ambiguous abbreviations before applying a rule.
Limits and review
- A mapping cannot establish the meaning of an ambiguous value without your confirmation.
- Date formats, units, and identifier leading zeros need deliberate handling.
- This workflow prepares table data; it does not promise to preserve workbook macros or complex workbook formatting.
Common questions
Which Excel file formats are supported?
Northmeld supports local table import from XLSX and XLSM files. Exported table data can be saved as XLSX or CSV.
Can I standardize country names?
You can define explicit value mappings, review matches, and confirm the vocabulary you want to use.
Will an XLSM export retain its macros?
The workflow exports table data, not a faithful reproduction of the original macro-enabled workbook.
